State Energy Office (SEO) Clean Technology Grant

Throughout September and October, members of the Renewable Energy Committee attended Morrison Dorm Renovation Project meetings and worked with the building team on submitting a grant to the State Energy Office (SEO).  Specifically, the grant requested funding to support the creation of a solar thermal array which will supply hot water heating to the dormitory. This facet of the project totals about $297,000, of which the committee has offered $100,000 (pending the approval of the fee) to leverage the additional funding. A final copy of the grant application with additional and in-depth information on the project can be viewed here when it is available.

Timeline:

  • October 16, 2004: As of today, the grant proposal has been submitted.
  • February 20, 2004: We have received word that our project has made it to the second round of the grant process, and will be competing with 20 other projects for probably about 6 grants (depending on how much they give to each project.) Regardless of the outcome of this grant, this is a huge step in the right direction and a sign that our project is being taken seriously.
  • May 2004: We were informed that we did not receive the grant, but we are currently pursuing other grant opportunities.
  • December 2004: The SOE obtained more funds and the Morrison grant was reconsidered.
  • January 2005: After meeting with UNC representatives and reconsidering the Morrison project, the SEO awarded the project $137,455.

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Grant

  • Z. Smith Reynolds Grant (Click to view our draft)
  • We are currently pursuing another grant for $100,000 towards the Morrison Dorm Renovation from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, an NGO which focuses on projects in North Carolina. With only one grant cycle this year (as opposed to the normal two) we expect some wait time on hearing back from them.
